Day 11 – Finishing straight

Everything has its end, only the sausage has two…is a German saying. But, assuming a certain difference between our trip and a sausage, I feel today comes its concluding part.

North of Padova is interwoven with water channels again with trails atop of their banks. On Sunday they are full with bikers and countless walkers. Or speed walkers I should say. Is this another ingredient in the Italian recipe for slimness?
A little bit farther huge villas and palaces mark the channels. The biggest ones have even remnants of piers. Possessing a boat and a pier in old days would correspond to two Maserati and one helicopter today?
Some of these villas left their heydays behind why the immediate adjacent neighbours still thrive. Despicable! The government should equalise it by taxing the rich. Or not?
After a week in Italy we internalise fully the saying: When in Rome do as the Romans do. For instance the red light is just a friendly advice to look both sides before crossing the street without redundant stopping.
Approaching Venice. Jeff Bezos got married here accompanied by the creme de la creme. Who will be expecting us there?
My navigation says that crossing this bridge is the ONLY way to get to the railway station. But these signs speak a clear language. Being lost for a while, I ask the security guy standing by:
“Pass the bridge!“ is his advice
“But the signs”, I retort mildly
“That’s OK, just go!”
… well, when in Rome….
Since there was no red carpet rolled out for us, and no paparazzis ready, we decided not to mingle with the crowds. Thus just one impression from this incredible city.
Our today’s finishing straight of 60 km made it a total of 805 km for the whole trip. And …
I was wrong with my intro. Our trip resembles a sausage. The train was at its beginning as well as its end. This one is to bring us back to Vienna. Or if I might allow a cheeky parallel: It was like a typical Woody Allen’s movie. It starts and ends with the same scene… and in the between so many lovely moments happens.
